This station serves an area of rural Cumbria. Situated at the loop of the River Eden, Appleby is a small town in rural Cumbria. Though traditionally a town, its size would to many make it considered a village. The area is overshadowed by the maginficent Appleby Castle that was once the home of Lady Anne Clifford in the seventeenth century. This charming town is a centre of tourism and can be extremely busy in the summer months due to is proximity to the Lake District National Park.
