Northern Rail are owned by a 50:50 joint venture between Serco Group plc, the international services company, and Abellio, a subsidiary of NS Dutch Railways. In addition to the Northern franchise, they also hold the 25-year concession to run Merseyrail services.

Travellers on Northern Rail services are allowed to take bikes on trains where there is space. All Northern Rail trains can accommodate up to two bikes, but motorcycles, tandems, tricycles and trailers are not permitted.

Animals such as dogs, cats and other small pets are permitted on Northern Rail trains, as long as they do not endanger or inconvenience your fellow passengers. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times, unless carried in a closed pet carrier.
